Maria Køhnke
Rust, Copenhagen
3. May 2007

I knew Maria Køhnke from her contributions to major bands such as Kira And The Kindred Spirits (see here: 08.11.2002, 07.03.2003 and 22.11.2003) and Swan Lee (see here: 25.03.2004 and 06.05.2004).She was not a person who put herself into focus, so I was looking foreward to seeing her perform as a solo artist with her own material.

Earlier this year Maria Køhnke released her first album, which 'till now is the most intersting Danish release this year: the exciting and varied album, Collector.
You can hear Maria's inspiration from Pernille Rosendahl and she obviously has the same talent for creating impressive music and catching tunes as one of my favorites, the mostly overlooked Maya Albana. Since the release day I've played the debut album of Maria Køhnke several times each day, and I continue to find new details in the tracks. It's a really beautiful album to be strongly recommented!

The album versions of the songs are almost semi acoustic, but the live versions were much more rocking, that what I'd expected. I would have liked to have heard one or two of the songs given acousticly to match with the mood from the album.

Never-the-less, we got a marvellous gig with two wellknown musicians in the band: Kashmir's guitarist Mads Tunebjerg played the bass and Stine Hjelm Jacobsen from the great Danish band NU, who split shortly after the release of their only 2003 album, AlphaBravoShockPopDisco! (you'll remember the hit Any Other Girl), on additional keys and choir. And famous Emil de Waal om drums.

You can read more about Maria Køhnke at her website here (and you can visit her myspace profile here).
