Niels Skousen
Pumpehuset, Copenhagen
20. September 2006

I've seen Niels Skousen live several times, but only three times through my camera lens: At Fælledparken's 75 Year Anniversary on 11. August 1984 (see the black/white photo below), at The Ken Gudman Memorial Concert 10. October 2004 in a duet with his old partner, Peter Ingemann from Skousen og Ingemann (see at the bottom at this page and here), and finally at this excellent concert at Pumpehuset 20. September 2006).

Let me admit that I'm a major fan of this godfather of Danish rock lyrics! I consider Niels Skousen to be one of the three masters of rock poetry in Denmark. The two others are C.V. Jørgensen and Steffen Brandt. Skousen is probably the greatest of them all. I spent my youth together with the songs of Skousen og Ingemann and I've got everything on record that Niels Skousen has ever recorded. I followed him from Young Flowers, to Skousen og Ingemann through Elverhøj, Solvognen and the solo projects. Skousen is like a Danish Leonard Cohen: a great poet being able to deliver his lyrics through beautiful music.

This night Skousen gave a retrospective show of songs from his amazing career: Two of the old songs (Lad ham gå and Herfra hvor vi står), 8 songs from the album, Dobbeltsyn and 7 songs from his most recent album, Daddy Longleg. Furthermore the band had rehearsed two option songs (Ord and Miraklet) which remained unplayed.

Skousen had put together a band of high calibre. All musicians are much younger than the 62 year old master: Jonas Struck from the former Swan Lee on guitar, the multi talented producer and composer, Nikolaj Nørlund on keyboards, Lennart Ginmann, mainly known from his jazz connections on bass and Gert Smedegård on drums. He's known from numorous connections (I've photographed him earlier backing these artists: C.V. Jørgensen and Sascha Dupont).

I did some shots of the band in the backstage dressing room and these photos can be viewed at the bottom of this page. My photos of Niels Skousen from 1984 and 2005 can bee seen here as well.
