Julie Berthelsen
Pumpehuset, Copenhagen
31. March 2007

At this page we could have had a lot of nice photos of the pretty, wonderful and talented Julie. But I'm sorry to disappoint you.

I have done live photos of Julie several times before: At a Melanie C showcase at Aveny T: 16. March 2003, Tivoli: 1. August 2003, Zulu Awards: 30. October 2003 + backstage portraits, Portalen: 29. October 2004, Rødovre Centeret: 2. April 2005 and Amager Bio: 11. February 2005 (click at the yellow highlights to se the series).

So once again I asked Julie's management for the permission to take another live photo series at the concert at Pumpehuset 31. March.

I was very surprised to get the answer that I was not permitted to take any pictures at any of Julie's concerts, as only one single photographer (selected by the management) was allowed to make photos! (I never saw any professionel photographer during the concert). I was quite sure that it was a mistake, so I wrote once again, but I received a similar answer.

I really do not understand the reason for that. I wonder if this is the right way to promote an artist: to prohibit the fans to take photos? How can this be executed when you realize that almost every person in the audience has a mobile with a camera. And how to control the audience at outdoor concerts?

So I only brought my tiny pocket camera (I'm a photographer and I never take one step without a camera), and I took a few snapshots of Julie at stage. After a short time I was stopped by a representative of the management, even though a lot of people took pictures with far better cameras than mine!? And no one else were stopped, as far as I saw. I wonder why, but find no answer ...
Let me stress that this is merely a decision by Julie's management, not by Julie herself. She is obliging and kind as always!

I could have had some really nice pictures from the concert if I were allowed to take photos with my professional camera. The light at Pumpehuset was excellent as usual and Julie looked marvellous at stage as she always does.

Only three days after the concert I got a question from a magazine (Beboerbladet), published in more than ½ million copies (552.000), if they could use one of my live photos of Julie to illustrate an article about her involvement in the campagne 1 Ton Mindre, - focusing on how to minimize the CO2 emission. They had selected one of my live shots from Amager Bio, 2005 (see below).

If I have had the permission to take photos at Pumpehuset, I could have offered some brand new photos to be published in the magazine, which is published on 14. may 2007. But I couldn't due to that incomprehensible decision by the management.

So this time I was not able to support Julie by offering a new stage photo of her, thanks to this decision.
My photos of Julie are used by several fan-sites in Denmark and one in Norway, and have also been used for a poster by Kulturhuset Islands Brygge (see below). I don't believe that Julie benefit from this way of promotion: preventing professional photographers to do non-commercial photos during her concerts.

Anyway, in spite of that frustrating experience, Julie and her backing musicians were just brilliant, giving a 19 song set with a nice mix of highlights from all three albums.
